Mayo On Target As Belouizdad Cruise To Victory
South African striker Khanyisa Mayo was on target yet again to net in two consecutive league matches as CR Belouizdad returned to Ligue 1 action with a comfortable 3-0 victory over JS Saoura on Tuesday night.
Abderrahmane Bentahar gave the Chababists an early lead in the second half before Aymen Mahious made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute. The former Cape Town City talisman rounded up the scoring in the 57th minute to ensure maximum points remain in Algiers.
Mayo, who joined Belouizdad during the off-season, is seemingly finding his feet in North Africa under recently appointed coach Abdelkader Amrani as he has been handed back-to-back starting berths for the first time since October.
The 26-year-old center-forward has repaid the faith shown in him by registering his name on the scoresheet when called upon by the new man in charge after opening his Ligue 1 account in a 2-0 win over ASO Chlef earlier this month.
Overall, Mayo has netted three goals in 12 appearances across all competitions, including a consolation goal against his native counterparts Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League when the two teams met in November. Belouizdad steered away from the relegation places and climbed up to seventh place with 16 points accumulated following the comfortable result, to make it four wins, four draws, and two losses after 10 matches played.
The Algiers-based outfit is five points behind current log-leaders JS Kabylie with two games in hand despite having a slow start to the 2024/25 campaign which saw French tactician Corentin Martin, who was only appointed in July 2024 relieved of his duties.
Amrani’s charges have made it four wins on the trot in the league and will shift their focus to their crucial CAF Champions League clash against reigning and record African Champions Al Ahly on Sunday, 22 December.
The Algerian giants will be desperate for maximum points in Cairo knowing that a win puts them in a much better place to secure passage to the quarterfinals as they will edge Jose Riveiro’s men in group C standings with the Red Devils’ scalp.
