Mayo Scores On Chiefs Debut Against Gallants

Khanyisa Mayo made an immediate impact, scoring on his Kaizer Chiefs debut in a 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants at FNB Stadium on Wednesday, preventing Amakhosi from capitalizing on Mamelodi Sundowns’ earlier loss and moving to the top of the table.

Mayo’s Header Canceled by Gallants’ Stunner

Mayo, a recent arrival from CR Belouizdad, put the home side ahead with a close-range header in the first half. However, his debut goal was overshadowed when Jaisen Clifford scored a magnificent long-range strike from the edge of the box, securing a valuable point for Marumo Gallants.

The draw is a missed opportunity for Chiefs in the title race, but Mayo’s performance offers a glimpse of the attacking quality he brings to the squad.

Amakhosi started strong, creating numerous scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes, but unfortunately, they couldn’t capitalize on their chances efficiently.

Chiefs’ hard work paid off in the 40th minute when captain Zitha Kwinika delivered a great ball into the box, finding Ashley Du Preez, who then set up Mayo to score his first goal for Amakhosi on his debut.

Chiefs should have increased the lead when Du Preez forced a penalty when Marvin Sikhosana handled the ball in the box, but Gaston Sirono’s spot kick was saved by Gallants’ goalkeeper Washington Arubi.

At the start of the second half, Siphesihle Ndlovu was replaced by Thabo Cele due to a yellow card received in the first half.

However, the introduction of Cele didn’t have an immediate impact on the game, and Amakhosi struggled to create clear chances in the early stages of the second half.

The technical team of Chiefs decided to introduce Mduduzi Shabalala and Glody Lilepo in the 57th minute to strengthen their attack.

This move had a significant impact, as Amakhosi began to create more scoring opportunities. In the 72nd minute, Lilepo was fouled, and Chiefs were awarded a free kick, but unfortunately, their shot was poor.

Just three minutes later, Gallants equalized through Jaisen Clifford, making the score 1-1. Clifford, who was linked with Orlando Pirates during the off-season, cut inside and unleashed a powerful strike that left Brandon Petersen with no chance at the far corner.

Amakhosi introduced Pule Mmodi and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo in search of a winning goal, but it was too late, and the game ended in a draw.

Following this result, Chiefs remain in third position with 14 points. The Phefeni Glamour Boys will take a break from league action this weekend as they prepare to face Angolan giants Kabuscorp in the CAF Confederation Cup at FNB Stadium.
