McCarthy Opens Up About The Pressure Of Following His Father’s Footsteps

Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy has spoken out about the pressure of living up to his father, Fabian McCarthy, who has a strong legacy at Amakhosi. 

The young defender made his debut for Amakhosi last season against Sekhukhune United in May and has had a good start to his career, winning the Nedbank Cup under his name despite not playing a single game in the tournament.

This season, McCarthy has been in impressive form, playing three games for Chiefs and winning two man of the match awards and keeping three clean sheets at the back. 

Unfortunately, the 21-year-old suffered an injury in his third game against Richards Bay, but he has confirmed that he is now fine and will start training with the team this week.

When asked about the pressure of following in his father’s footsteps, McCarthy said, “No, I don’t feel any other pressure about what my father achieved at Chiefs.

He added, “Ever since I joined Chiefs from U15 level, I’ve always told myself that it’s my time to do my job because my father has already done his job.”

McCarthy emphasized that he doesn’t allow pressure to get to him, saying, “Things are shown on the field and I allow no pressure on me so that I will achieve what I want to achieve.” 

This mentality has clearly served him well so far in his career, and he looks set to continue making a name for himself at Chiefs.

Fabian is a legend of Amakhosi, having joined Chiefs in 2003 and left Amakhosi at the end of the 2007/08 season. 

During his time at the club, he played more than 150 games, winning two league titles, one Nedbank Cup title, three Carling Knockout titles (then known as Telkom Knockout), two Vodacom Challenge trophies, and one Telkom Charity Cup. 

The 48-year-old McCarthy made his debut for Chiefs in November 2003 against Bidvest Wits.
