Mdunyelwa Eyes Champions League Glory

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Zuko Mdunyelwa believes winning the CAF Champions League would be the ultimate reward for the club and its supporters as they prepare for a decisive semifinal second-leg clash against Esperance.
The Brazilians enter the encounter with a slender 1-0 aggregate lead following a disciplined first-leg victory in Tunisia last weekend. The South African champions are now within touching distance of another final, continuing their relentless pursuit of a second continental crown.
It has been a long wait for the Pretoria-based giants, who last lifted the prestigious trophy in 2016. Since that historic night, the club has endured several “near-misses,” often seeing their campaigns cut short in the knockout stages.
While last season saw a breakthrough to the final, it ended in heartbreak—a result the current squad is desperate to rectify.
Speaking ahead of the second leg at Loftus Stadium on Saturday, Mdunyelwa emphasized the magnitude of the occasion.
“Winning this Champions League will mean a lot to us,” he said.
“But most importantly, it will mean a lot to the club and our supporters. I think that is what we are looking forward to giving the team and our fans.”
Beyond their narrow first-leg lead and the advantage of playing at home, Sundowns will also rely on the experience of head coach Miguel Cardoso.
Cardoso previously coached Esperance and notably eliminated Sundowns in the semifinals of the same competition in 2024 before eventually losing to Al Ahly SC in the final. His familiarity with Esperance is expected to play a key role in Sundowns’ preparations.
Mdunyelwa also highlighted the value of having a coach with inside knowledge of their opponents.
“We have a coach who knows Esperance, and that gives us valuable insight—things you might not pick up just by watching matches,” he added.
“For me, it comes down to the details. It also gives us confidence going into the game, knowing the coach understands the strengths and weaknesses of that team.”
With confidence high and history within reach, Sundowns will be determined to finish the job at home and move one step closer to continental glory.
