Messi’s Late Magic Ruined England’s World Cup Dream In Atlanta

Defending champions Argentina produced a dramatic late comeback to book their place in a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final, defeating England 2-1 at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The victory marked the second time Argentina had come from behind during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Earlier in the tournament, they recovered from a two-goal deficit to beat Egypt 3-2, once again underlining their resilience on football’s biggest stage.

The semi-final was also the sixth World Cup meeting between Argentina and England. The two football powerhouses had previously faced each other in 1962, 1966, 1986, 1998 and 2002. Their most iconic encounter came at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, remembered for Diego Maradona’s infamous “Hand of God” goal and his unforgettable “Goal of the Century.”

Argentina are now just one win away from claiming a fourth FIFA World Cup title, having previously lifted the trophy in 1978, 1986 and 2022. Captain Lionel Messi, who inspired his country to glory in Qatar four years ago, was named the tournament’s Best Player on that occasion.

England, meanwhile, were hoping to end a 60-year wait for a second World Cup title. Their only triumph remains the 1966 victory over West Germany on home soil.

With the win, Argentina advanced to Sunday’s World Cup final, where they will face Spain after La Roja defeated France 2-0 in the other semi-final. England will now take on France in Saturday’s third-place play-off.

The match began at a lively pace, with both teams creating promising opportunities during the opening 20 minutes. However, neither side was able to make the breakthrough as both defences remained organised and disciplined.

England came closest to opening the scoring in the 36th minute when Reece James curled a dangerous free-kick towards goal from the left edge of the penalty area, but Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced an excellent save to ensure the sides went into the break level at 0-0.

The deadlock was finally broken 10 minutes into the second half. Morgan Rogers delivered an inviting cross into the area, and Anthony Gordon made no mistake, firing a right-footed effort into the bottom-left corner from close range to give England a deserved 1-0 lead.

The Three Lions nearly doubled their advantage in the 65th minute when Declan Rice unleashed a powerful strike from outside the penalty area, but Martínez once again came to Argentina’s rescue with another outstanding save.

Argentina gradually grew into the contest and threatened in the 68th minute when Messi floated an inviting cross into the box for Nico González, whose powerful header was comfortably gathered by Jordan Pickford.

The defending champions’ pressure eventually paid off in the 85th minute. Following a corner, Messi picked out Enzo Fernández on the edge of the area, and the midfielder rifled a superb right-footed strike into the back of the net to restore parity.

With momentum now firmly on their side, Argentina continued to press for a winner, and their persistence was rewarded deep into stoppage time.

Messi once again proved the architect, delivering a perfectly weighted cross that Lautaro Martínez met with a close-range header to complete a remarkable comeback and secure a 2-1 victory, sending the defending champions into a second successive FIFA World Cup final.

Argentina will now have the opportunity to defend the title they won in Qatar four years ago when they face Spain in what promises to be a captivating World Cup final on Sunday.
