Mngonyama Set To Depart Swallows
Moroka Swallows defender Kwanda Mngonyama is reportedly set to leave the Soweto giants at the end of the season, according to a Sportswire source.
Mngonyama, a former Orlando Pirates defender, was one of several Swallows players affected by the club’s non-payment issues in December 2023. This resulted in the club forfeiting points to Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows.
Despite the past troubles, the club renegotiated with Mngonyama, who has emerged as a key player under coach Musa Nyatama.
The 30-year-old defender from KwaZulu-Natal joined Swallows from Orlando Pirates at the beginning of last season. He had previously spent a single season (2021/22) with Pirates.
Mngonyama has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season, including a Man of the Match performance against Mamelodi Sundowns that ended 2-2 few weeks ago.
Swallows, who are expected to release more players at the end of the season, currently sit 13th in the DStv Premiership table with 29 points after 26 matches.
Their next fixture sees them travel to Athlone Stadium on Tuesday to face Cape Town City, Mngonyama’s former club. He was part of Benni McCarthy’s City side that won the MTN8 in the 2018/19 season, defeating SuperSport United at Moses Mabhida Stadium. That victory marked McCarthy’s first trophy as a head coach.
