Mokwena Praises Mokoena for Early Substitution
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena commended Teboho Mokoena for taking the initiative to request a substitution after feeling discomfort in his hamstring during their 2-2 draw against Moroka Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday.
Mokoena, who scored for Sundowns in the first half, was spotted clutching his hamstring. Recognizing the potential injury, coach Mokwena immediately substituted him off. Sipho Mbule replaced the reigning PSL Footballer of the Year in the 43rd minute.
Mokwena praised Mokoena’s decision, considering the congested fixture schedule for Sundowns players. This includes their national team duties, where Bafana Bafana recently secured a bronze medal at the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast back in February.
“He felt a slight tweak, and I’m very proud of him for coming off,” Mokwena said after the game. “I’ve emphasized to them that if they feel anything something, they need to come out of the game immediately. Don’t take risks.”
“He scored a great goal and could have continued playing,” Mokwena acknowledged. “The adrenaline from scoring can mask pain, but he was professional enough to recognize the issue. I’m very proud of him for that.”
Unfortunately, Sundowns’ path to victory was derailed despite a promising start. Marcelo Allende added a second goal six minutes into the second half. However, Swallows staged a dramatic comeback to secure a draw against the African giants.
The demanding schedule continues for Sundowns with minimal rest. They are scheduled to depart Tuesday to face ES Esperance in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final in Rades on Saturday.
