Mothiba Departs Strasbourg After Contract Expires
South African striker Lebo Mothiba has left French club Strasbourg following the expiration of his contract.
Injuries hampered Mothiba’s playing time in the 2023/24 season, with a patellar tendon rupture keeping him sidelined in the second half of the campaign. This injury also ruled him out of the recent Africa Cup of Nations where Bafana Bafana secured bronze.
“After six seasons with Racing, Lebo Mothiba has left the club on the expiration of his contract,” Strasbourg announced on X space.
Mothiba featured in 15 Ligue 1 matches for Strasbourg this season, totaling 611 minutes. He received five starting nods across the team’s 34 fixtures, primarily coming off the bench on 10 occasions. His last competitive appearance was a 13-minute stint against Lorient on December 17th, 2023, in a 2-1 Strasbourg victory.
Despite limited playing time, Mothiba still managed to contribute offensively. He finished the season as Strasbourg’s joint-third top scorer in Ligue 1 with three goals. His last goal came in a 1-1 draw against Rennes on October 29th, 2023.
This past season marked Mothiba’s second stint with Strasbourg, having rejoined in July 2022 after a loan spell with Strasbourg II. He previously played for Lille, making a memorable debut with a goal against Nantes at the age of 22. Across his Ligue 1 career, Mothiba has amassed 118 appearances, scoring 26 goals and providing five assists.
On the international stage, Mothiba has represented South Africa in 14 matches, finding the net four times. His most recent appearance was a full 90 minutes played against Ivory Coast in October 2023.
