Mothiba Attracts Interest From Belgium

South African forward Lebo Mothiba, a free agent after his contract with French club Racing Strasbourg expired, is reportedly attracting interest from Belgian giants Standard Liege.

The 28-year-old previously played from Strasbourg in the 2018/19 season until the end of that last term after joining them from Lille. Injuries hampered his time there, but he recently recovered from a knee issue that sidelined him since December 2023.

Mothiba isn’t just on Standard Liege’s radar; French Ligue 1 sides SCO Angers and Montpellier HSC are also interested in securing his signature.

Last season, Mothiba featured in 15 Ligue 1 matches for Strasbourg, totaling 611 minutes. While starting only five times in their 34 fixtures, he provided valuable support coming off the bench on 10 occasions. His final appearance came in a 2-1 victory over Lorient on 17 December 2023, where he played for 13 minutes.

Despite limited playing time, Mothiba remained a goal threat. He finished the season as Strasbourg’s joint-third top scorer in Ligue 1 with three goals, his last coming in a 1-1 draw against Rennes on 29 October 2023.

This past season marked Mothiba’s second stint with Strasbourg after rejoining in July 2022 following a loan spell with Strasbourg II. He also has experience with Lille, where he made a memorable debut at 22 years old with a goal against Nantes. Across his Ligue 1 career, he has amassed 118 appearances, scoring 26 goals and providing five assists.

On the international stage, Mothiba has represented South Africa 14 times, scoring four goals. His most recent appearance was a full 90 minutes played against Ivory Coast in October 2023.
