Msimango Replaces Kekana At Bafana

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has called up Kaizer Chiefs defender Given Msimango to replace Grant Kekana in the national team.

Kekana was surprisingly taken off during Orlando Pirates’ Nedbank Cup final win against Mamelodi Sundowns at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.

The 31-year-old’s substitution before the second half initially appeared tactical, with coach Rulani Mokwena replacing him with attacker Junior Mendieta. Bongani Zungu then filled Kekana’s center-back position alongside Mosa Lebusa.

“There is one change to the initial squad announced by Coach Hugo Broos,” said Bafana in a statement.

“Due to injury, Grant Kekana has been released and Given Msimango has reported for duty.”

Kekana received a red card in February’s Africa Cup of Nations semifinal against Nigeria, sacrificing himself as the last man back. This suspension ruled him out of the victorious bronze medal match against DR Congo, where Bafana Bafana emerged on penalty kicks.

Bafana is currently in camp preparing for two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers: an away match against Nigeria on 7 June and a home game against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein four days later.
