Pirates Confirms Departure Of Cameroonian Striker

Orlando Pirates has announced the immediate departure of Cameroonian striker Souaibou Marou.

Marou, a highly rated prospect signed from Cameroonian giants Coton Sport, joined Pirates midway through last season. He was part of Rigobert Song’s Cameroon squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they famously defeated Brazil in the group stages – the first African nation to achieve this feat. However, Marou did not see any playing time during the group stage.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm the departure of striker Souaibou Marou,” the club stated in a press release. “The Cameroonian forward is now free to join a club of his choice. We wish Souaibou all the best in his future endeavors.”

The 23-year-old made nine appearances across all competitions for Pirates but failed to find the net during his time at the club. Facing stiff competition from established strikers like Evidence Makgopa, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Zakhele Lepasa, and Kermit Erasmus, Marou struggled to secure regular playing time.

Marou’s departure coincides with the previously announced exit of assistant coach Sergio Almerana on Monday.
