Nigeria’s Super Eagles Hit Another Snag As Coach Deal Falls Through

In another embarrassing turn of events for Nigerian football, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the collapse of a proposed deal with German coach Bruno Labbadia to take over as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

The NFF initially announced Labbadia’s appointment, but the contract was not signed at the time. Subsequent reports revealed that Labbadia had not signed the contract due to tax issues. The NFF confirmed these reports, stating that stringent German tax regulations had prevented the agreement from going through.

NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau explained that the federation was unwilling to pay the additional tax percentage demanded by German authorities on Labbadia’s salary. “It is not possible for us to shoulder the responsibility of shelling out another money, between 32% to 40% of his salary, after paying the agreed monthly wage,” Gusau said in a statement.

The NFF and Labbadia had initially reached an agreement in principle before the tax issue arose. However, Labbadia insisted that the NFF pay the full tax amount, a condition that the federation was unable to meet.

As a result, the NFF has appointed Augustine Eguavoen as interim head coach of the Super Eagles. Eguavoen will lead the team in their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda. This will be Eguavoen’s fourth stint as head coach of the Super Eagles.
