‘No Ego, Just the Jersey’ – Boks Loose Forward

Springbok loose forward Paul de Villiers says the selfless culture fostered within the national setup has made his rapid rise to Test rugby much easier to navigate as he prepares for just his third international appearance.

After being thrust into the spotlight with a late call-up for his debut against England at Ellis Park, De Villiers admitted that having a full week to prepare for last Saturday’s clash against Scotland helped settle some of the nerves that inevitably come with representing South Africa.

The 23-year-old believes the environment created by Rassie Erasmus and his coaching staff allows players to perform with confidence, regardless of their level of Test experience.

“I think that first one I got very short notice that I was playing,” De Villiers said.

“So getting in the week and a bit more prep was good for me. There’s still a lot of nerves, but it was good to almost expect to know what’s coming and be more ready for the game.”

“I’ve said it before, but credit to this environment and the coaches and all the players around me. They really help all the players feel comfortable and feel ready to play,” he added.

De Villiers’ rise has been one of the standout stories of South African rugby this season, progressing from the domestic game to the United Rugby Championship before earning his Springbok opportunity.

However, the flanker insists the transition has felt natural because every step of the journey has prepared him for the next challenge.

“You almost go through stages,” he said.

“You get used to senior rugby, then you play a bit of Currie Cup and then you get selected for your franchise to play URC. After that you work towards a goal to get into the squad here.

“Everything happens systematically and you have certain training standards. During the week you prepare for the game and get used to what will happen on Saturday. Being in camp and experiencing the guys, the coaches and how they see things, and how we align our minds towards a common goal, is awesome.”

More than the rugby itself, De Villiers says it is the collective mindset within the Springbok camp that has impressed him the most.

He believes the squad’s willingness to put the team ahead of individual ambitions is a major reason behind South Africa’s sustained success, with every player understanding that selection is ultimately about serving the jersey rather than chasing personal accolades.

“I get the opportunity this week and it will be someone else next week,” he said.

“But every guy that steps into that role plays towards a common goal. They’ve created that alignment in the squad among the players.

“It’s not about the ego or the player himself; it’s more about the team. You put that ego to the side and play towards a common goal and for the team.”

For De Villiers, that philosophy has made adapting to Test rugby significantly easier, allowing him to focus solely on contributing whenever called upon as the Springboks continue to develop the next generation of international stars.
