Petersen Says Chiefs Ready For Tough Al Masry Challenge

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper and captain Brandon Petersen says he and his teammates fully understand the challenge that awaits them when they face Al Masry in their CAF Confederation Cup group-stage opener on Sunday.
Chiefs will play in front of an expected 86,000 spectators at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria in their first Group C fixture.
The venue carries fond memories for South African football — it is the same stadium where Mamelodi Sundowns lifted the CAF Champions League title after beating Zamalek in the 2016 final.
Although the atmosphere is expected to be intimidating for Amakhosi, Petersen believes their performances in the preliminary round against AS Simba have shown that they are capable of competing at this level.
“I think we have shown in the games we played while qualifying for the group stages that we can actually do well,” said Petersen.
“Even though we don’t have our full army behind us in the stadium at the moment, it’s important to understand that when you’re away from home, there are certain things you must do and certain things you must avoid.
“I think we have prepared well. We know what is expected of us on Sunday. I’m feeling positive.
“I think the guys and I are ready and looking forward to the game.”
Chiefs boast several players with CAF inter-club experience, including Gaston Sirino, Lebogang Maboe, and Inacio Miguel—an advantage Petersen believes will be crucial.
“I think it’s a big positive,” he said.
“Having players in the team with CAF experience, along with the depth in our squad, gives us confidence. We know that in these competitions — even in the league back home — we are going to need everyone.
“The way the guys are fighting at training and competing for places is encouraging.
“You know that no matter what happens, whoever comes in or goes out, there will always be someone ready to step up.
“For me, those are all positive signs. We are looking forward to the challenge. We know it won’t be easy, but we are ready to fight.”
