Pheeane’s Late Strike Secures Vital Win For AmaTuks In PSL Promotion Playoffs
Kamohelo Pheeane emerged as the hero for University of Pretoria (AmaTuks) with a dramatic late winner in their opening match of the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs on Sunday.
The encounter against Baroka FC at Tuks Stadium looked destined for a goalless draw until Pheeane’s strike in the 88th minute.
The home side’s striker displayed exceptional composure, powering a shot from a tight angle that beat Baroka goalkeeper Boalefa Pule. The goal sparked jubilation amongst the AmaTuks technical staff, who embraced and celebrated the crucial victory.
This win propels AmaTuks to the top of the mini-league playoffs with three points. Richards Bay, yet to play their first match, sit in second place. Baroka FC currently occupies the bottom spot with a negative points tally.
The opening half witnessed an intense battle, but both teams failed to convert their chances, resulting in a scoreless first 45 minutes.
AmaTuks qualified for the playoffs by finishing runners-up in the Motsepe Foundation Championship this season, while Baroka FC secured their spot by finishing third in the same league. Richards Bay finished second-from-bottom in the DStv Premiership last season, becoming the third team to vie for promotion.
Tlisane Motaung’s side now set their sights on a crucial clash against Richards Bay at Durban’s King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday. A victory will see them secure a perfect six points after two matches and solidify their position at the top of the mini-league.
The winner of this mini-league will join Magesi FC, champions of the Motsepe Foundation Championship, in the DStv Premiership next season.
