Pietersen Reflects On Testing Start At The Sharks

Hollywoodbets Sharks interim head coach JP Pietersen has admitted that his first week in charge was a stern test, following his appointment to lead the Durban-based side after the departure of John Plumtree.

Pietersen marked his debut as head coach with a narrow but morale-boosting 28-23 Investec Champions Cup victory over Saracens at Kings Park on Saturday, with the Sharks leaning heavily on the experience of their Springbok backline.

The former Springbok winger stepped into the role earlier than expected after Plumtree, who was initially set to step down at the end of the season, exited following the Sharks’ defeat to Stade Toulousain last weekend.

Having excelled at junior level and guided the Sharks to Currie Cup success last year, Pietersen earned the trust and respect of players, fellow coaches and management, making him a natural choice for the interim position.

“It was a 100 percent testing week,” Pietersen said after the match.

“There were a lot of moving parts in a short space of time – players coming in and a coach stepping down. But having been a player myself, I understand what players think and what they need.

“All players want is clarity – the goal and the plan going forward. Once that’s clear, everything becomes easier.”

The Sharks’ tries were all scored by Springbok stars, with Siya Kolisi, Aphelele Fassi, Edwill van der Merwe and Grant Williams crossing the whitewash. Williams’ try was a standout moment, finishing off a powerful midfield surge by Ethan Hooker, who offloaded neatly for the scrumhalf to score.

George Whitehead was reliable from the kicking tee, adding crucial conversions to keep the Sharks ahead throughout the contest.

The match was also a milestone occasion for Andre Esterhuizen, who made his 100th appearance for the Sharks and was honoured with the captaincy on the day.

Saracens launched a late assault in search of a comeback, but despite several infringements and mounting pressure, the Sharks showed resilience. Pietersen’s side successfully defended a final lineout after the hooter before kicking the ball into the stands to seal a famous home victory.

“That’s the game of rugby – it’s unpredictable,” Pietersen said of the tense finish.

“It sums up what I’ve been asking of the team – to fight for the full 80 minutes. There were patches where we didn’t get it right, but the character the players showed was outstanding.

“You have no idea what that win meant to the group in the changeroom afterwards.”
