Pirates’ Champions League Hopes Hangs In Balance As They Lose To TS Galaxy
Orlando Pirates’ pursuit of a CAF Champions League spot next season has become an uphill battle after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium in the penultimate game of the season.
Siphiwe Mahlangu, who has been in top form, scored from close range in the second half to condemn Pirates to their second consecutive loss, following a surprise defeat to Richards Bay in the previous match.
Despite their setback, a glimmer of hope remains. Stellenbosch, their rivals for second place, also suffered a defeat, falling to Mamelodi Sundowns at Athlone Stadium. This keeps Pirates’ Champions League dreams alive, but only if they can secure a victory against SuperSport United at Orlando Stadium next weekend.
The match against TS Galaxy proved frustrating for Pirates. They struggled to break down a resolute Galaxy defense. The home side even had the first real chance of the game, with Lehlogonolo Mojela’s free kick threatening Sipho Chaine.
The first half ended scoreless, and despite coach Jose Riveiro’s visible frustration on the bench, Pirates failed to unlock the Galaxy defense. Their only noteworthy chance came in the 65th minute when PSL top scorer Tshegofatso Mabasa’s angled shot was saved by Fiacre Ntwari.
Just three minutes later, disaster struck for Pirates as Mahlangu capitalized on a brilliant pass from Puso Dithejane to put Galaxy ahead. However, news filtered through that Stellenbosch were also trailing against Sundowns, ending up losing, offering Pirates a lifeline in their Champions League chase.
