Pirates Close To Target Under Riveiro’s Guidance

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro believes his team is nearing its full potential as they chase the second-place finish in the DStv Premiership, which secures a CAF Champions League berth.

A hard-fought 1-0 victory against AmaZulu marked a significant step towards their seasonal goals. The match, characterized by intense energy and tactical awareness, was ultimately decided by a solitary goal from Tshegofatso Mabasa after AmaZulu received a red card.

This win follows their convincing 4-2 triumph over Usuthu in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final, showcasing the Pirates’ resilience and determination.

“We need to win games week in, week out,” said Riveiro after the game.

“We need to do it how we want to, play the football that we want to play and everything else is a consequence.

“We don’t play for the results, the result is a consequence of doing things better than the opponent in our way and recently we managed to do it in most of the minutes of the games, in most of the phases of the game and that’s why we are getting results. Everybody wants to play for the results, everybody wants to get the results, and everybody needs good results.

“So, we want to do it in a way and right now we are close to the team that we want to be in the next months, in the future, in the next season. But still, there is a lot of room for improvement. We take game after game, one by one.”

The victory against Usuthu propelled Pirates to 40 points after 24 matches, trailing Stellenbosch FC by three points after their win over TS Galaxy. Despite mirroring their strong finish from last season, Riveiro cautions against complacency in upcoming fixtures.

“There’s no time to feel so great,” he said.

“We will celebrate slightly. But from onwards, we will be thinking again of our next competitor to prepare ourselves as well as possible.”

Pirates’ next challenge comes against Royal AM at Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday (15:00).
