Pirates Suffer A Loss To Sekhukhune In The League Opener

Early pressure has fallen on Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou following a disappointing start to the 2025/26 season. The team suffered a 1-0 loss to Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Despite hitting the post twice, Pirates struggled to break down a resilient Sekhukhune defense. Pirates dominated possession but failed to convert their control into a winning result.

Key Moments and Missed Opportunities

The match was a lively affair with chances for both sides. Sekhukhune’s Bradley Grobler had an early opportunity after getting ahead of defender Nkosinathi Sibisi, but he lost his footing at a crucial moment. Moments later, a near own-goal from Sekhukhune defender Daniel Cardoso—whose attempted clearance from a Deon Hotto cross struck the upright—nearly gifted Pirates a goal.

The game became an end-to-end battle, though neither goalkeeper was seriously troubled until the second half. Pirates’ Relebohile Mofokeng came close, cutting inside but failing to curl the ball past goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner.

The breakthrough came just four minutes into the second half, shocking the home crowd. A shot from Thabang Monare came off the upright, and Siphesihle Mkhize capitalized on the rebound, scoring at the near post. Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine initially thought he had made the save, but the ball had already crossed the line.

Pirates continued to press for an equalizer, and the post came to Sekhukhune’s rescue once again when a header from Mbekezeli Mbokazi struck the upright with Leaner beaten. Despite creating numerous opportunities, including a late chance for Yanela Mbuthuma, Pirates were unable to find the back of the net.

Sekhukhune successfully held on for the three points, marking another victory for them at Orlando Stadium, having won there by the same scoreline last April.

Interestingly, these two teams could meet again in the MTN8 final, as both have advanced to the semifinals of the competition. Pirates will face Mamelodi Sundowns in a two-legged semifinal, while Sekhukhune will take on Stellenbosch.
