Poggenpoel Relishing Career Trajectory At Durban City
Durban City midfielder Brooklyn Poggenpoel says he is delighted with the trajectory of his career, insisting there is still much more to come from him on the pitch.

Sportswire has been informed that Poggenpoel narrowly missed out on a spot in South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final squad in June. Former Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos ultimately selected Kamogelo Sebelebele instead after Thapelo Morena suffered an injury, prioritizing Sebelebele’s versatility across right-back and central midfield.
Despite that national team heartbreak, Poggenpoel is thriving at Durban City, having joined the club from SuperSport United at the start of last season.
He played a key role in securing the maiden Nedbank Cup title under former coach Pitso Dladla, while also helping the side secure a top-eight league finish following their promotion at the end of the 2024/25 season.
Now under the guidance of former Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef, the 26-year-old midfielder is expected to anchor City’s midfield this season.
On Sunday, City kicks off the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round match against Burundian Cup champions Rukinzo FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
“At the end of the day, I just have to do my job—it doesn’t matter what shirt I’m wearing,” said Poggenpoel.
“I’m happy with the trajectory of my career. Obviously, last season we won the cup, but I feel we can achieve even more. When the collective does well, individuals naturally succeed.”
Poggenpoel’s form has earned him a call-up to the preliminary Bafana Bafana squad selected by new head coach Pitso Mosimane on Friday.
The squad will be trimmed to 26 players ahead of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea on 27 September on home soil and Eritrea three days later at a neutral venue in Egypt. Bafana Bafana will also face Egypt in an international friendly on 4 October.
Originally brought to Durban City by Gavin Hunt, Poggenpoel comes from strong footballing heritage—his uncle, Shane Poggenpoel, won three league titles with SuperSport United under Hunt.
Poggenpoel has amassed 32 appearances and registered two assists across all competitions for Durban City.
