Political Impasse At SAFA: Presidential Elections Stall Bafana Bafana’s Coaching Decision
Sportswire has been informed that the South African Football Association (SAFA) is locked in an administrative impasse regarding the Bafana Bafana head coaching position, largely driven by the high-stakes SAFA presidential election scheduled for 12 September.
However, sources indicate that SAFA will likely clarify its position by either renewing or concluding its agreement with Hugo Broos once the election process resolves.
Broos’ current contract expires at the end of July. SAFA faces a crucial choice: offer a contract renewal or recruit a new head coach.
Additionally, Broos—who returns from Belgium later this month—has yet to submit his formal technical report following Bafana Bafana’s historic Round of 32 run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite SAFA’s public commitment to sit down with Broos to map out the national team’s future, sources confirm that this formal review meeting has not taken place.
Consequently, the SAFA Technical Committee has not officially opened the application process for a new head coach. The committee itself remains divided by conflicting internal interests, further complicating the decision-making process.
Adding to the political complexity is the upcoming SAFA elective conference on 12 September, where incumbent president Danny Jordaan will be challenged by AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu.
Crucially, the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers kick off just one week after the vote.
Following recent media reports claiming that SAFA had granted Broos a one-year contract extension through the 2027 AFCON, SAFA issued an official statement categorically denying the rumors.
An association insider revealed that SAFA was pressured to issue the formal denial after commercial partners, including Adidas and Standard Bank, requested immediate clarification.
“The South African Football Association (SAFA) has learnt with concern of reports and rumours being circulated by respected media houses alleging that Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has been offered or issued with a one-year contract extension,” the association said.
“SAFA wishes to categorically state that these reports are false, unfounded and misleading.
“To set the record straight, SAFA has not issued any contract to any coach in respect of the Bafana Bafana head coach position. Coach Hugo Broos remains under contract with SAFA until the end of July 2026, in accordance with his existing agreement.
“The Association’s governance processes regarding the Bafana Bafana technical team have not yet been concluded. Therefore, no decision has been taken and no contract has been been issued or approved by the National Executive Committee.”
SAFA added that reports suggesting Broos had already signed a new contract had created unnecessary speculation.
“It is therefore regrettable that reports have been published alleging that Coach Broos has already received a contract extension, with some publications further attributing these claims to unnamed sources.
“Such reporting creates unnecessary speculation, misinforms the football public and undermines the Association’s established decision-making processes.”
While Broos previously indicated an intention to retire from full-time coaching following the 2026 World Cup, the 74-year-old veteran has hinted at remaining open to a technical advisory role within the association. Having spent 55 years in professional football as both player and manager, Broos acknowledged that he does not envision managing from the touchline at age 78 for the 2030 World Cup.
In its statement, SAFA also appealed to media organisations to seek comment before publishing reports relating to the association.
“SAFA further appeals to all media houses to uphold the highest standards of responsible journalism by affording the Association a right of response before publishing allegations or claims relating to its affairs,” the statement continued.
“A simple request for comment would enable SAFA to verify facts and assist in preventing the publication and circulation of unfounded or unsupported reports.
“SAFA remains committed to transparent communication and will make an official announcement on the Bafana Bafana coaching position once the appropriate internal processes have been completed and the relevant decisions have been taken by the Association’s structures.
“The Association thanks its stakeholders and the public for their continued support and encourages them to rely only on official SAFA communication channels for accurate information regarding national team matters.”
