PSL Postpone Awards Due To Sundowns’ FIFA Club World Cup

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has confirmed that its 2024/25 awards ceremony will not be held in June, primarily due to reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns’ participation in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.

The awards are now expected to take place after Sundowns’ commitments, as the dominant club is anticipated to collect the majority of accolades, including the PSL Footballer of the Season, Coach of the Season, and PSL Golden Boot.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the PSL announced: “In recent seasons, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Awards Ceremony has traditionally been held during the month of June. However, due to Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club’s participation in both the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2024/25 CAF Champions League Final, the League has taken the decision to postpone this season’s PSL Awards Ceremony.”

The statement further added: “The PSL, its Member Clubs, and all stakeholders in professional football across the country are united in their support for Mamelodi Sundowns as they fly the flag for South African football at these prestigious events. The League will communicate the new date and further details of the Awards Ceremony in due course.”

Sundowns, who will host the first leg of the CAF Champions League final this coming weekend against Pyramids and the following weekend, will then compete in the FIFA Club World Cup in the US.

Their fixtures include facing Ulsan HD FC of Korea on 18 June, German giants Borussia Dortmund on 21 June, and concluding their group stage against Brazilian side Fluminense four days later.
