Pyramids Book CAFCL Semi-Final Spot Despite ASFAR Defeat

Pyramids FC survived a late scare to secure their ticket to the CAF Champions League semi-finals despite suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of a resurgent AS FAR at Stade d’Honneur Stadium, Morocco on Tuesday night.

The home team signaled their intent from the onset, with Youssef El Fahli opening the scoring in the eighth minute. Second-half substitute Joel Beya doubled the lead for the Moroccan side after just 11 minutes on the field of play, setting up a nervy ending.

The Egyptian side had claimed a comfortable 4-1 victory in their backyard last week, with highly rated DRC striker Fiston Mayele scoring a brace in the match. Mayele was on target once again in Meknes, but his goal was overturned.

Now, the knockout debutants will face either one of South African cup kings Orlando Pirates or Algerian champions MC Alger, with the two teams set to battle for the remaining semi-final spot at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday (18:00) as the Buccaneers hold a 1-0 aggregate lead advantage.

Pyramids will play the first leg of their semi-final encounter away from home on 18 April before turning out for the crucial second leg in front of their home fans in Egypt on 25 April for a spot in the final of Africa’s elite club competition.
