Racing 92 President Criticizes Kolisi’s Debut Season

Racing 92 president Jacky Lorenzetti expressed disappointment with Springboks captain Siya Kolisi’s debut season at the club.

Kolisi joined Racing 92 after leading South Africa to victory at the Rugby World Cup in France last year.

The 33-year-old icon, reunited with national teammate Trevor Nyakane, featured in 18 matches across all competitions. However, Lorenzetti wasn’t satisfied with Kolisi’s performances, nor with those of Fijian powerhouse Josua Tuisova, who was limited to a handful of games due to a long-term injury.

Kolisi’s season was hampered by an injury, and his overall performance, particularly in the loss to Bordeaux over the weekend, fell short of Lorenzetti’s expectations. The president compared Kolisi to club legend Wenceslas Lauret, highlighting the difference in impact. Kolisi was even substituted in the 75th minute of the Bordeaux match.

“Kolisi had a remarkable start to the season, where he was a unifier off the field,” he told French outlet Midi Olympique.

“The injury layoff was harmful to him. He gained weight, lost shape and (over the weekend against Bordeaux) he was transparent.

“In the back-row, we used to have an ultra-present warrior, a warrior called Wenceslas Lauret. For the moment, Siya is not making us forget Wenceslas. But we think that next year, that will change.”

Racing 92 now sets its sights on the 2024/25 season. Lorenzetti confirmed that Owen Farrell, eager to start his tenure at the club, underwent medical examinations last week.

Meanwhile, Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus will be looking for a strong performance from Kolisi in the upcoming season. The Boks face Ireland in a two-test series, followed by a match against Portugal, before tackling six grueling Rugby Championship matches. The year concludes with the November tour.
