SARU Reject Kolisi’s Contract Buy-out Speculation
South African Rugby Union (SARU) has dismissed reports that they might contribute to Springbok captain Siya Kolisi’s salary as speculation mounts about his potential return from Racing 92 in France.
Kolisi joined the French club last year from the Durban-based side The Sharks after leading the Boks to Rugby World Cup glory.
However, his time in France has been marked by criticism from Racing 92 president Jacky Lorenzetti, who expressed disappointment with Kolisi’s debut season. Following a loss to Bordeaux, Lorenzetti publicly criticized Kolisi’s performance, comparing him unfavorably to former player Wenceslas Lauret.
These comments fueled rumors of Kolisi’s potential return to South Africa, possibly with the Sharks, which would align with Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus’ preference for his captain to play domestically. Reports suggested SARU might contribute to Kolisi’s hefty French salary, but the union has categorically denied these claims.
“Media are advised that speculation that SA Rugby is involved in the ‘buy-out’ of the club contract of Siya Kolisi is without any basis in fact,” said SA Rugby. “SA Rugby also wishes to make clear that it is not in any way involved in any conversations relating to such an outcome should they, in fact, be taking place. For clarity, when national players return to play in South Africa, they may be added to the category of players of national interest at the discretion of SA Rugby. At such point their union remuneration is supplemented by SA Rugby.”
