Barker: We Want To Reach Another Semi Final

Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker has deemed the MTN8 as a lucrative competition to begin the new season, highlighting the importance of reaching a second consecutive semi-final.

Stellenbosch will look to hit the ground running and continue where they left off when they clash with an equally motivated TS Galaxy in the MTN8 quarter-final at Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday (15:00).

At the beginning of their impressive 2023/24 season, Stellies managed to make it to the MTN8 semi-finals but were unfortunately knocked out by eventual champions, Orlando Pirates.

In undying spirits, Barker’s boys went on to clinch their first major trophy in the PSL top flight, lifting the Carling Knockout Cup in December last season and finishing third place.

Having announced themselves as a force to be reckoned with after an impressive season, Barker assured that his lads are well and ready to kick off the new season by securing another MTN8 semi-final spot come Sunday.

“The players are really in good spirits, looking forward to getting ourselves into another semi-final and a lucrative competition to start the new season,” said Barker.

Taking on a well-oiled TS Galaxy, the 56-year-old stressed the importance of approaching the game with a cautious attitude given the danger posed by their opponents.

“Sunday is not going to be an easy game, we have to make sure that that we go on Sunday with the right mentality, the right commitment and attitude,” asserted Barker

With a new season looming, the Stellies made sure to take part in a busy PSL transfer window, quickly acquiring the services of a few household names.

Former Richards Bay midfielder, Sanele Barns and Lehlohonolo Mojela were two of Stellenbosch’s most prominent signings.

The Stellies gaffer reassured that his recruits have started to fit in like a glove at the Winelands.

“Our new players have fitted in nicely, Barns, Bradley Mojela as well as Omega Mdaka and some of our youngsters who have been promoted from the DDC team and are currently in the UK,” declared Barker.
