Komphela Likely To Stay For Next Season At Arrows Despite Interest

Steve Komphela, coach of Golden Arrows, appears likely to remain with the club next season despite reported interest from Tanzania. News emerged that Simba SC, a Tanzanian club, had been in talks with Komphela about a potential contract.

However, according to Sportswire sources, Komphela is expected to rejoin his players for pre-season training commencing later this month.

Komphela arrived at Arrows in March this year when the team was struggling, having not won in 11 consecutive matches. This poor form put immense pressure on the then-coach, Mabhuti Khenyeza. However, Arrows chairlady Mato Madlala saw this as a valuable learning experience for Khenyeza.

Komphela successfully ended the winless streak in his debut match, defeating Polokwane City away.

Overall, Komphela’s record with Arrows last season was mixed. He secured three wins across all competitions, lost two (including a heavy 7-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates), and drew six (including a draw against champions Mamelodi Sundowns) in his 11 matches in charge.

Prior to joining Arrows, Komphela had a brief and challenging stint at Swallows earlier in the season before moving to Arrows.

He previously enjoyed a successful three-year spell with Mamelodi Sundowns, winning three league titles, the MTN8, and the Nedbank Cup.

This marks Komphela’s second stint with Golden Arrows. He first joined in December 2018 when he replaced Clinton Larsen before departing for Sundowns in 2020 to join a coaching trio with Rulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi, following Pitso Mosimane’s departure to Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
