Reports: Kolisi Unlikely To Return In SA

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi’s potential return to the Sharks appears uncertain following reports that Racing 92 is seeking to recoup the significant transfer fee they paid for the two-time World Cup winner.

Kolisi was rumoured to have express his desire to return to South Africa and play for the Sharks. Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus also confirmed during the two-test matches against Australia in the Rugby Championship two weeks ago that they were involved in exploring the possibility of bringing him back.

The 33-year-old flanker joined Racing 92 last season but faced criticism from club owner Jacky Lorenzetti following their defeat in the Top 14 playoffs. Lorenzetti accused Kolisi of gaining weight, losing form, and being invisible during the match.

These comments did not sit well with Kolisi’s camp, who were keen on his return to the Sharks. Erasmus has said it many times that he prefers to have his captain to play in South Africa.

However, according to reports on Thursday, Kolisi will likely return to France after the Rugby Championship in September. Racing 92 is reportedly seeking to recoup the R17 million they paid to the Sharks for Kolisi, who is still under contract.

Kolisi, who made 18 appearances for Racing 92 last season, will regroup with the Springboks squad this week for their upcoming Rugby Championship matches against the All Blacks at Ellis Park Stadium on 31 August and 7 September at DHL Stadium in Cape Town. If he remains injury-free, Kolisi will then lead the Boks in the Autumn Nations Series in November in the UK.
