Official: Stellenbosch Sell Rayners To Sundowns
Stellenbosch FC has confirmed that striker Iqraam Rayners has joined Mamelodi Sundowns after the latter triggered a buy-out clause in his contract.
Rayners, who has enjoyed two stints with Stellenbosch, departs as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 68 goals in 135 appearances. He previously represented Stellenbosch between 2017 and 2020, helping them secure promotion to the South African top-flight.
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi expressed his belief that Rayners will be a valuable asset in their CAF Champions League campaign.
“We are proud of how we as a club helped reignite Iqraam’s career and for providing him the platform to become a full international with Bafana Bafana,” Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie said.
“Since re-joining Stellenbosch, Iqraam has developed into one of the country’s leading strikers and his goalscoring return played a massive role in our recent success.
“We have the utmost gratitude for his immense contributions and wish him all the best as he embarks on this next chapter of his career.”
Rayners’ departure comes after Stellenbosch FC finished third in the league last season and won the Carling Knockout Cup. He was also recognized for his outstanding performances, being named the 2023 Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament and nominated for several other awards.
