Return To Happy Hunting Ground: Chiefs Take Crucial CAF Confed Cup Tie To Durban

Moses Mabhida Stadium management has confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs will host Zambia’s Red Arrows in Durban for the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round tie.
Fresh off a 1-1 Betway Premiership draw against Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, Amakhosi travel to Ndola’s Levy Mwanawasa Stadium for Saturday’s first leg before returning to South Africa to settle the aggregate score in KwaZulu-Natal.
A aggregate victory over Red Arrows will send Chiefs straight into the group stages of Africa’s secondary club tournament. Amakhosi earned a first-round bye due to their high continental ranking after reaching the group stage last season, where they narrowly missed out on the quarterfinals following a final-round defeat.
Why are Kaizer Chiefs Hosting Red Arrows in Durban?
Moses Mabhida Stadium serves as Kaizer Chiefs’ official secondary venue, consistently drawing massive crowds across Durban and KwaZulu-Natal.
The stadium holds special significance for the Naturena side. Amakhosi ended their long title drought at the venue by defeating Orlando Pirates in the 2024/25 Nedbank Cup final. The venue also hosted Chiefs’ 2014/15 MTN8 triumph over the same Soweto rivals.
The pitch in Durban recently underwent a major overhaul by the eThekwini Municipality. The venue re-opened its doors for domestic football earlier this month, hosting the MTN8 final where Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Orlando Pirates on Saturday—marking the 11th MTN8 final staged at Moses Mabhida Stadium since the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
What is Kaizer Chiefs’ Continental History?
Kaizer Chiefs hold a unique place in South African football history as the nation’s only club to win this competition in its previous iteration. Amakhosi lifted the 2001 African Cup Winners’ Cup (then known as the Mandela Cup) under former head coach Muhsin Ertugral, defeating Interclube of Angola in the final.
With strong local support expected in Durban, Fernando Da Cruz’s men will look to leverage their home-away-from-home advantage to secure group-stage football once again.
