Riveiro Keen To Continue Trophy Haul

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro insists that they are not tired of winning trophies, and they want to go all the way in the Carling Knockout ahead of their round of 16 encounter against newly promoted Magesi FC at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (15:00).

The Soweto Giants have become a formidable force in domestic cup competitions, having completed a clean sweep since the Spanish tactician took over – winning back-to-back Nedbank Cup titles and three consecutive MTN8 trophies.

But despite all that success, the league cup is one silverware Riveiro and his charges are yet to get their hands on as they were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the competition by Richards Bay last season.

Riveiro, who has mastered the art of winning cup competitions in South Africa, has dismissed the suggestions that winning the Carling Knockout is one of his aims now, stating that it’s about the team vying to clinch another title. “This is not about me, it’s about Orlando Pirates facing the Carling Cup to play every possible game, that’s the pressure coming from the position we’re in and that’s the situation one more time, ” said the Bucs coach.

“We want to play every game in the tournament, one by one, the first opponent to deal with is Magesi. We are fully focused on this fixture and that’s it.”

However, the 49-year-old mentor says there is no added pressure to win another silverware following a historic MTN8 triumph that saw the Buccaneers become the first team in PSL history to three-peat in the top eight competition early this month.

“But there’s no extra pressure now because we managed to win the MTN8, ” said Riveiro, who is in the final year of his contract at Pirates.

“The expectations are very high from the first day and we are ready to answer those expectations with good performances and the results are not in our control. “In our control is to give our all against Magesi, to respect the opponent, to respect the tournament, we are playing at home, and we are going to give our best and hopefully it’s enough to get the result that we want.”

Pirates has not won this competition in 13 years; the last time they won, it was the second double treble in the 2011/12 season when they beat Bidvest Wits at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
