Riveiro Officially Joins Al Ahly
Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has officially been appointed by Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
Riveiro’s departure from Orlando Pirates came with four games remaining in the season, at which point the club had already secured a second-place finish in the league.
Following his exit, he was heavily linked with Al Ahly, and the official announcement was widely anticipated.
His appointment comes just days after Al Ahly clinched their league title on Wednesday.
During his three seasons with Orlando Pirates, Riveiro enjoyed considerable success, winning five major knockout trophies. This past season, he also led the Buccaneers to the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
Notably, Pirates defeated Al Ahly in the group stages, topping their group, before ultimately losing to another Egyptian side, Pyramids FC. Pyramids FC is set to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg of their final on Sunday.
Riveiro’s announcement was fast-tracked as Al Ahly required a new coach for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States of America next month.
At Al Ahly, the former Orlando Pirates coach replaces Marcelo Koller, who was sacked after Al Ahly’s defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League semi-final.
