Riveiro To Stick To The Winning Formula

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro stated that his team will maintain their successful approach from the CAF Champions League campaign and see no need for new strategies.

Riveiro, who is departing Pirates at the end of the season, explained that their upcoming home game against Pyramids at FNB Stadium on Saturday will be a continuation of the methods that have propelled them to the semi-finals.

Pirates are set to host Pyramids of Egypt in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final, aiming to preserve their unbeaten record in the competition.

The Soweto giants were one of only two teams to complete the group stages without a loss. Notably, they are the sole remaining team in the competition yet to taste defeat, a streak extending to 12 matches.

Their journey to the semi-final involved overcoming Algerian side MC Alger with a 1-0 aggregate victory.

Pyramids, known for their quick attacking players, secured their place in the semi-finals by defeating FAR Rabat 4-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals. They established a significant three-goal lead in the first leg at home, which proved sufficient to withstand a 2-0 loss in the return match at Stade d’Honneur.

“All these games are difficult to approach due to the level of the opponent, first of all,” said Riveiro.

“Because of the different type of the environment that you find. I think I said this, after my first game in Algeria in the group stage [against CR Belouizdad], there is not time to breath when you are on the bench, you have to help the players tactically and lots of things are happening in every minute of the game.

“That tells you about the rhythm and that is different between the league and the amount of time you have to think, executive one action is different in the domestic league and the Champions League.

“Because the opponent has a different capacities tactically, technically and I think Orlando Pirates so far managed to be at that level and compete very well in that space.

“So, on Saturday, we are going to do anything that we didn’t try before, or we don’t know we can do already.

“Because, like I said, the most important thing in sport, in competitions, is to have the confidence and not only the quality, not only the preparation.

“It is about you to believe that you can do it again and we have proved to ourselves that, not to others in this competition that we are capable to do it.

“On Saturday, it is going to be another repeating.”

The winner of this semi-final will face the victor of the other semi-final clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and defending champions Al Ahly, whose first leg is scheduled for Loftus Stadium on Saturday.
