Santos Reflects On Tough Sundowns Debut After Defeat To Arrows

Mamelodi Sundowns new signing, Nuno Santos, says it was not the ideal start to his career at the club after making his debut in a 1-0 loss to Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday night.
Nuno Santos on His Debut: “Mixed Feelings”
The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder, signed for a reported R20 million from Vitória SC, came off the bench early in the second half to replace Jayden Adams against Abafana Bes’Thende. Despite showing glimpses of quality, Santos admitted the defeat left him disappointed.
“It is mixed feelings because I wanted to start with a win,” Santos said.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t do it. But at the same time, I’m happy with my debut here. I’m very proud of the team — we tried for 90 minutes to get three points, sadly we couldn’t. But we will go again in the next game.”
Wearing Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s Iconic Number 10
Santos has inherited the number 10 jersey, previously worn by star attacker Lucas Ribeiro Costa, who left a huge mark at Sundowns last season. The move shows the club’s faith that Santos can become a key figure as Sundowns chase multiple trophies in the 2025/26 season.
The debut was made even more challenging by the rainy conditions in Durban, which made ball control difficult. Arrows capitalized on the weather and produced a spirited display that unsettled the defending champions.
“It was a very physical, emotional game. Both teams had quality moments. It wasn’t easy, but I’m happy to have made my debut,” Santos added.
Determined to Impress Sundowns Fans
Santos promised fans he will give everything to succeed at Masandawana, emphasizing his team-first mentality and commitment to contributing in attack.
“I’m a guy that gives it all, with quality, always trying to assist my teammates. Always thinking about the team,” he said.
“I felt huge support from the fans, very different from Portugal but amazing at the same time. I want to thank everyone for welcoming me. I hope to bring joy to the team and the supporters.”
