Shabalala Aims To Seize Opportunity with Bafana

Bafana Bafana midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala is relishing the opportunity to prove himself in the national team, following an impressive stint in the COSAFA Cup in June.
The 21-year-old, who made his debut for Bafana in the regional tournament that was held in Bloemfontein, has continued to impress with Kaizer Chiefs, helping Amakhosi win four of their five league games.
Shabalala’s form has earned him a spot in Hugo Broos’ 23-man squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria in the City of Roses.
The Amakhosi’s DStv Diski Challenge former team captain believes that participating in the COSAFA Cup was a crucial step in his journey to the national team.
“I think for us going there was a good opportunity to show the coach that we want to be here in the first squad,” Shabalala said.
“We are here now, and finally, the coach saw us. I think it’s a big opportunity for us in our careers.
“It’s everyone’s dream to play for this country, and I think we’re here to help the team to win games and qualify for the World Cup.”
The young midfielder is determined to make a lasting impression on the national team.
“I think to be here now, the next step is to work hard and retain my position in this team,” Shabalala added.
“Obviously, it will not be easy to do that because there are players who are experienced. But what I need to do is to play my part so that I can be here in the next camp.”
Shabalala’s experience playing for South African youth national teams, including the U17, U20, and U23 teams, has prepared him for the challenge ahead.
As Bafana Bafana prepares to face Lesotho and Nigeria, Shabalala will be aiming to play his first World Cup qualifier.
With vice captain Themba Zwane out injured, Shabalala, alongside Sipho Mbule and Relebohile Mofokeng, will compete for playing time in Zwane’s position.
