Shalulile Dedicates Record-Tying Goal To Coaches

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile has reacted to tying Siyabonga Nomvethe’s record of 129 goals in the PSL, dedicating the achievement to all the coaches who have played a role in his career.

Shalulile scored his 129th goal in 292 appearances as Sundowns defeated Magesi FC 2-0 in a Betway Premiership match on Wednesday.

The Namibian captain controlled the ball just outside the box, turned his marker, and fired a powerful left-footed shot past sprawling goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze.

The tally does not include two goals he scored during the 2015/16 PSL playoffs for Highlands Park.

“It means a lot because it has put me amongst the top goalscorers of all time,” Shalulile said through Sundowns media.

“But I always give the glory to God. I always say this is impossible without God. This is why I’d rather be emotional and thank the Lord, thank my teammates, and thank everyone who has been behind every goal I’ve scored in my career in the PSL and also in the NFD.”

The 32-year-old, who was linked with a move away from Sundowns during the off-season, joined Teko Modise as a two-time winner of the PSL Footballer of the Season award, which he claimed in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

He has scored more goals against Orlando Pirates than any other club—six in 18 matches. The two teams are set to face off in a sold-out MTN8 semi-final second leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium this Saturday.

Since joining Sundowns, Shalulile has won five league titles, the MTN8, the Nedbank Cup, and the African Football League. He has scored 102 goals and provided 26 assists in 208 matches for the club.

“I’m just doing my work—scoring goals,” Shalulile added.

“To be honest, I told them (my teammates) I would score because you could see what was happening—not getting the game time. I always came on with 10 minutes left, but I kept the faith, I kept working hard knowing one day the Lord will reward you, and these are the days that one has been rewarded.”
