Springbok Assistant Coach Keeps Team Selection A Secret

Springbok assistant coach Tony Brown has refused to reveal whether the team will keep the same side that beat New Zealand two weeks ago when they face Argentina this coming weekend.

This after he credited the players for their excellent execution of the game plan.

Reflecting on a Historic Victory

The Springboks, who arrived in Durban on Thursday, achieved a record victory against the All Blacks in Wellington, just a week after a loss at Eden Park in the Rugby Championship.

This win, in which they scored five tries in the second half while holding the All Blacks scoreless, catapulted the Boks back to the top of the world rankings and saw them retain the Freedom Cup for the second consecutive year.

“You’ll have to wait and see,” a concise Brown stated.

The team to face a tricky Los Pumas side at Kings Park Stadium on Saturday will be announced on Tuesday.

Squad Depth and Confidence

Although coach Rassie Erasmus is known for unexpected selections, Brown expressed full confidence in whoever takes the field, citing the team’s immense squad depth.

“I think it’s always a tricky scenario with Rassie [Erasmus, Bok head coach] at the helm. You guys just have to wait for him to announce the team,” Brown later added.

“I think we have a squad of 35 to 45 players who are all capable of playing test match rugby. They all offer different individual attributes to the game.”

“I’m always comfortable with whoever we send out there because they can do the job and play the way we want to as a team,” Brown said.

“As Andre Esterhuizen [who was sitting next to Brown] just mentioned, we’re always attacking together on the attacking side of things. All the players I’ve coached in the last couple of years can do that. I’m 100% confident that whoever we send out will do the job. We want to build depth, and you’ve seen the selections change every week, so I don’t think that’s going to change.”

The Tight Rugby Championship Race

The Rugby Championship table is incredibly tight, with all four nations still in contention for the title. Australia, who beat and lost to the Boks in South Africa, currently leads the standings with 11 points after four matches.

The Boks follow with 10 points, while New Zealand is also on 10 points in third, and Argentina is in fourth with nine points. All four teams have a win-loss record of two wins and two losses.

When asked about the importance of a bonus point win against Argentina, Brown emphasized a focus on the process rather than the result.

“A bonus point would be great, but we are focusing on how we beat Argentina,” said Brown. “We have to perform very well to get the result. If things go exceptionally well, we might sneak a bonus point. But our focus is about getting across the line, performing well, and securing a win against Argentina.”
