Springboks Call Up Gumede As Kolbe Undergoes Knee Exam

Celimpilo Gumede (loose forward) has received his first Springbok call-up on Monday and immediately joined the training session in Pretoria.

This follows the release of wing Cheslin Kolbe, who will undergo a medical examination for a knee niggle picked up during his Japanese club season.

Kolbe, initially named among 35 players for the Boks’ first training camp, joined the team on Sunday but was released on Monday for further examination. The Vodacom Bulls, facing Leinster in their upcoming Vodacom United Rugby Championship semi-final, agreed to release the uncapped Gumede.

“Celimpilo has been playing impressive rugby this season and we are excited to see how he integrates in the squad and what he has to offer at training,” said Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus.

The Boks are also monitoring Kurt-Lee Arendse, who fractured his cheekbone in the Bulls’ quarter-final win over Benetton, and winger Canaan Moodie, who missed the weekend’s game.

The Springboks conclude their first training week on Friday before reassembling on Sunday. The team for the opening Test against Wales at Twickenham will be named next Tuesday, departing for London a day later.
