Spurs’ Bid For Pretoria Callies Status Rejected
Sportswire has been informed that Cape Town Spurs have made an offer to purchase the status of Motsepe Foundation Championship side Pretoria Callies, but the offer has been rejected.
According to a source close to the situation, Callies is open to selling, but only if an “eye-watering” and “appetising” offer is presented.
“The club is not in the market unless someone puts up something that is appetizing,” the source revealed.
Spurs, who were relegated to the ABC Motsepe Regional League at the end of last season after finishing at the bottom of the Motsepe Foundation Championship, are reportedly making persistent efforts to secure the deal.
However, their approach has been criticized. “The owner of Callies doesn’t like the attitude of the way they are trying to do the business. It looks like they are trying to buy the PSL status of Callies,” the source added.
Spurs had a tumultuous end to their previous season. They attempted to retain their status by lodging protests with the PSL DRC and then SAFA arbitration, claiming that Durban City midfielder Saziso Magawana was ineligible.
However, all these matters were dismissed with costs. They then pursued the matter in the High Court but ultimately withdrew.
Despite the ongoing speculation, Callies chairman Moses Malada dismissed the rumors when contacted by Sportswire, stating, “No, we are not selling, and these are just rumors that we cannot confirm.”
Roger De Sa Returns to Spurs, Middendorp Linked to Durban City
In other developments, Cape Town Spurs has officially announced the return of Roger de Sa as the club’s Technical Director. The former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach was most recently with Cape Town City.
“Roger de Sa returns as Cape Town Spurs’ Technical Director,” Spurs confirmed in a statement.
“Roger will lead club strategy; performance structure & assist the first team. Roger brings FIFA-level experience from Egypt & Iran under Carlos Queiroz. Welcome back, Roger.”
This marks a homecoming for de Sa, who previously coached the club when it was known as Ajax Cape Town, notably leading them to victory in the MTN8 during the 2015/16 season against Kaizer Chiefs.
His return comes after he was unable to help Cape Town City retain its PSL top-flight status, as they lost the playoffs to Orbit College, who gained promotion.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that former Spurs coach Ernst Middendorp is on his way to join Durban City. It is rumored that he will take on the role of technical director, working alongside head coach Gavin Hunt.
