Stellenbosch FC Signs Former Sundowns Defender
Stellenbosch FC has made a significant addition to their squad with the signing of experienced defender Brian Onyango on a free transfer.
Onyango, previously released by Mamelodi Sundowns, brings a wealth of knowledge and over 200 career appearances in South African football.
As the first Kenyan player to represent Stellenbosch FC, Onyango will wear the No. 2 jersey this season. His arrival is expected to bolster the club’s defensive line and contribute to both domestic and continental success.
“Brian is a player who has enjoyed great success during his career and we are looking forward to adding his experience and winning mentality to our squad,” Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie said.
“He has been brought in to bolster our defensive line and we have no doubt that he will make a valuable contribution towards both our domestic and continental ambitions.”
Onyango’s signing comes at a crucial time for Stellenbosch, with defender Ismail Toure seeking a move abroad. While a transfer to Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, or Sundowns seems unlikely due to their filled foreign player quotas, Onyango’s presence provides a solid defensive option.
The MTN8 semifinal against Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday (19:30) will be a particularly interesting matchup for Onyango, facing his former club at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
