Stellies Starlet Feels He’s At The Best Club

Stellenbosch FC academy graduate Kyle Jurgens believes that the Cape Winelands club is the premier platform for young football prospects in South Africa.

The young midfielder was promoted to the Stellies first team in the 2022/23 season after an impressive campaign in the team’s reserve side. Jurgens currently fills in at right-back following the departure of former captain Deano Van Rooyen to Orlando Pirates.

The Western Cape-born midfielder has expressed his willingness to permanently occupy the right-back position if required.

Regarding the success of former teammates who have moved to larger clubs, Jurgens is convinced that he is at the best club to further his career. He highlighted the club’s facilities, coaching staff, players, and overall environment as key factors.

“I think as a youngster this is the best club to be at, you know the facilities that we have, the coaches, the stuff, the players, and all the people that come together,” said the Stellies youngster.

Stellies has established itself as one of the top talent development academies, with several graduates earning national team call-ups. In addition to Van Rooyen, Iqraam Rayners has been sold to Mamelodi Sundowns, Antonio van Wyk is leaving to join Austrian second division side SV Ried. Previous Stellies graduate include Ashley du Preez, who was sold to Kaizer Chiefs, Zitha Kwinika sold to Chiefs, Olwethu Makhanya sold to Philadelphia in the MLS, Junior Mendieta to Sundowns, and Nkanyiso Zungu to Pirates.

Jurgens attributed his positive assessment to the strong belief in youth development held by his coach, Steve Barker. He explained that the club focuses on both football skills and mental development, making it an ideal environment for young players.

“They help to groom youngsters and it’s not just football but mentally as well. So, I think this is the best place to be at because of also coach Steve is giving youngsters opportunities,” explained Jurgens.

Jurgens will face a stern test when he fills in at right-back for Stellies against Sundowns in the MTN8 first leg semifinal at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday (19:00).
