Stormers Forward Learns URC Red Card Fate

The DHL Stormers have received a disciplinary ruling following a red-card incident involving one of their players during a recent United Rugby Championship (URC) clash.

Thirty-year-old Ruan Ackermann has been handed a three-match suspension after being sent off in the Stormers’ 20-11 URC semi-final defeat to Leinster in Dublin earlier this month.

Ackermann’s return had been welcomed by Director of Rugby John Dobson, who viewed the experienced forward as a valuable addition to the squad’s depth ahead of the crucial encounter. However, what initially appeared to be a positive return quickly turned sour when Ackermann received a yellow card that was subsequently upgraded to a 20-minute red card following a bunker review.

The incident occurred in the 69th minute, with the Stormers still in contention and pushing for what would have been a significant upset against the Irish giants. Their hopes suffered a major blow when Ackermann was penalised for an illegal clean-out at the breakdown, leaving the Cape Town outfit with little chance of mounting a late comeback.

There is, however, some relief for the player, as the suspension can be reduced by one week should he successfully complete the World Rugby Coaching Intervention Programme.

The full disciplinary statement read:

“The disciplinary process related to Ruan Ackermann’s red card in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship semi-final against Leinster Rugby on Saturday, 6 June, has resulted in a three-match suspension.

“Following an act of foul play by DHL Stormers replacement player No. 20, Ruan Ackermann, referee Hollie Davidson issued a red card in the 69th minute under Law 9.20(a) – Dangerous play in a ruck or maul. A player must not charge into a ruck or maul. Charging includes any contact made without binding onto another player in the ruck or maul.

“In his submission to Judicial Officer Simon Thomas, Ackermann accepted that he had committed an act of foul play that warranted a red card. Mr Thomas determined that the incident met the red-card threshold, with a mid-range entry point of six weeks.

“The player received 50 per cent mitigation, reducing the sanction by three weeks, due to his acceptance of responsibility and exemplary disciplinary record. This results in a three-match suspension.

“Should the player successfully complete the World Rugby Coaching Intervention Programme, the sanction will be reduced by one additional week.”

Ackermann will miss the following fixtures:

  • DHL Stormers vs Griquas – 18 July 2026 (Currie Cup)
  • Boland vs DHL Stormers – 26 July 2026 (Currie Cup)
  • DHL Stormers vs Hollywoodbets Sharks – 1 August 2026 (Currie Cup)

Should he complete the intervention programme, he will become available one week earlier.
