Stormers Injury Update: Nel Calf Injury Timeline & Simelane Selection Plan

The Stormers are taking a cautious approach to Ruhan Nel’s latest calf injury, with the experienced centre expected to be sidelined for around a week. Meanwhile, Wandisile Simelane’s impressive performances are strengthening his case for more opportunities in the coming matches.

Stormers assistant coach Dawie Snyman provided an update on Nel’s condition, explaining that the injury was relatively minor but that the coaching staff was unwilling to take unnecessary risks.

“It’s a small calf injury. It’s more precautionary. He could have been pushed to play, but with a calf, if you rip it, you could be out for longer, so we didn’t want to take a chance,” Snyman said.

He also confirmed that the injury affected a different calf from the one that forced Nel to the sidelines last season.

The update echoes comments made by director of rugby John Dobson after the Stormers’ Investec Champions Cup victory over Bristol Bears. Dobson indicated that Nel should be unavailable for only about a week but stressed the importance of taking a conservative approach to the injury.

“Ruhan has a calf injury and should only be out for a week, but we need to be conservative because it could turn into three to four months if it goes wrong,” Dobson said.

At 35, Nel is understandably being managed carefully, with the Stormers keen to ensure that a minor setback does not develop into a long-term problem.

Nel’s absence opened the door for Wandisile Simelane, who delivered a solid performance against Bristol after making an impact off the bench in the previous week’s match against the Sharks.

The versatile back has once again demonstrated his value to the squad, offering the coaching staff options across several positions while showing that he can make a meaningful contribution when called upon.

Dobson believes Simelane deserves more game time, particularly given his ability to cover fullback, wing and centre.

“We’ve got to give him more games. He covers everywhere for us. He covers 15, comes off the bench at wing, and handles the contestables,” Dobson said.

Simelane also has ambitions of making the No. 13 jersey his own, although competition for the position remains strong, with Nel, the team’s regular captain, still an important figure in the backline.

“He wants a crack at 13, which is tough when your regular captain is there, but Ruhan won’t play every game at 35,” Dobson added.

Giving Simelane more opportunities forms part of a broader plan to build squad depth and prepare the team for the demands of a long season.

Vernon Matongo and Zachary Porthen also impressed against Bristol, giving the Stormers more selection options ahead of their match against Scarlets.

However, Dobson stressed the importance of sticking to the team’s long-term plans. These include giving Ollie Reed game time in the next two matches and carefully managing key players’ workloads ahead of the Nations Championship.

Dobson described the approach as a “critical path”, allowing the coaching staff to plan player involvement and communicate expectations clearly.

“We call it the critical path so we can plan where we can tell Wandi, you have two benches and two starts. The guys know where they stand and can work with it,” he explained.

The challenge for Dobson will be to balance the need to reward players who perform well with the importance of adhering to a carefully constructed rotation plan.

For now, the immediate priority is ensuring that Nel recovers fully before returning to action.

In the meantime, Simelane and the Stormers’ emerging forwards have an opportunity to make their mark and could yet influence the team’s selection decisions in the weeks ahead.
