“TLB” Conquers America In 2026
Former Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been recognized as one of Major League Soccer’s best young players after securing fourth place in the 2026 MLS 22 Under-22 class.
Affectionately known as “TLB,” the Chicago Fire star is the highest-rated defender on the prestigious list, claiming the number-four spot overall.
The 21-year-old centre-back has enjoyed a stellar debut season in North America following his transfer from the Pirates in January. He has quickly established himself as a cornerstone for the Chicago Fire, making 19 appearances and starting 17 matches across all competitions during the 2026 campaign.
His impressive club form earned him a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Under coach Hugo Broos, Mbokazi played every minute of South Africa’s historic run to the knockout stages.
Earlier in the season, Mbokazi was selected for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game after receiving the highest number of fan votes, though a minor injury unfortunately prevented him from participating.
His fourth-place finish in the 22 Under-22 rankings is a testament to his meteoric rise since making the switch to the MLS.
