Sundowns Edge Arrows In Betway Premiership Thriller

Mamelodi Sundowns continued their impressive run of form with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows in a Betway Premiership encounter at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night, strengthening their push for league glory.

Teboho Mokoena and Iqraam Rayners found the back of the net for the Brazilians in the first and second halves, respectively, while Arrows pulled one back through Sede Dion, who converted from the penalty spot in the second half.

Following this important victory, the Brazilians remain in second place in the league standings with 44 points.

Their title rivals, Orlando Pirates, also secured a win on Wednesday night against Polokwane City, keeping the pressure firmly on at the top of the table.

The Brazilians began the match brightly, dominating proceedings and creating numerous scoring opportunities within the opening 20 minutes.

However, despite their early attacking intent, they were unable to convert their chances into goals.

Their persistence eventually paid off in the 28th minute when Teboho Mokoena produced a stunning right-footed strike from the centre of the box to give his side a deserved 1-0 lead.

Sundowns maintained their attacking momentum and nearly doubled their advantage before halftime.

Khulumani Ndamane rose well to meet a cross with a header, but the young defender narrowly missed the target. The first half ultimately ended 1-0 in favour of the hosts.

Sundowns started the second half with the same intensity and were rewarded when Rayners headed home from the left side of the six-yard box to extend the lead to 2-0. He later had another effort ruled out for offside, denying him a brace on the night.

However, the match took a dramatic turn shortly after the second goal when Jayden Adams received a straight red card for a reckless studs-up challenge on Ayabulela Maxwele’s ankle, reducing Sundowns to 10 men.

Arrows capitalised on their numerical advantage in the 78th minute after Khuliso Mudau conceded a penalty for a handball inside the area. Dion stepped up confidently and fired a right-footed shot past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.

Despite being a man down, Sundowns showed resilience and defensive discipline to see out the remainder of the match. Although they were unable to add a third goal, they held firm to secure all three points as the encounter ended 2-1 in their favour.
