Sundowns Humiliate Chiefs In Carling Knockout Quarter-Final

Mamelodi Sundowns delivered a dominant performance, crushing Kaizer Chiefs 4-0 to secure their place in the Carling Knockout semi-finals. The match played at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, showcased the vast gulf in quality between the two teams.
Three first-half goals set the tone for the match. Iqraam Rayners opened the scoring from the penalty spot before adding a stunning second with a precise shot into the far corner. Peter Shalulile extended Sundowns’ lead with a well-placed finish, effectively sealing the game before halftime. Khuliso Mudau completed the rout in the second half.
Sundowns could have added more goals, with Arthur Sales’ effort being saved by Chiefs goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari.
This encounter marked the first meeting between the two teams in the competition since the 2015/16 final, which Sundowns won 3-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Both teams entered the match with contrasting results. Chiefs had drawn 2-2 with Magesi midweek, while Sundowns had comfortably defeated Cape Town City 3-0.
Sundowns’ superiority was evident from the outset, as they exploited Chiefs’ defensive errors. A reckless challenge by Njabulo Blom on Lucas Ribeiro Costa resulted in a penalty, which Rayners converted.
Rayners continued to torment the Chiefs defense, scoring his second goal with a brilliant individual effort. Shalulile then extended the lead with a well-taken goal, leaving Chiefs stunned.
Chiefs’ captain, Inácio Miguel, was sent off in the second half for a foul on Shalulile, further compounding their misery. Mudau’s goal sealed a humiliating defeat for the Amakhosi.
In the other quarter-final on Saturday, Richards Bay defeated Cape Town City 5-4 on penalties to advance to the semi-finals.
The semi-final draw will take place on Sunday after the completion of the remaining quarter-finals.
