Sundowns Winger Completes Cyprus Move

Cyprus-based club AEL Limassol has announced the signing of Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Thapelo Maseko on loan until the end of the season.

Maseko has struggled to establish himself at Sundowns this campaign. He has made a total of 45 appearances over three seasons with the Tshwane giants, scoring three goals and registering one assist.

Seven of those appearances have come this season, during which he is yet to make a goal contribution.

The 22-year-old joined Sundowns on a long-term deal from SuperSport United ahead of the 2023/24 season.

“AEL Limassol announces that it has reached an agreement with South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns FC for the loan of footballer Thapelo Maseko until the end of the current football season,” the club said in a statement.

“Thapelo Maseko is 22 years old and is capable of playing in all midfield positions. He began his professional career at SuperSport United, where he made 34 appearances.

“In 2023, he signed for champions Mamelodi Sundowns FC and has since recorded 45 appearances in domestic and international competitions, including the African Football League, Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League. In addition, he is a South African international and has earned seven caps to date.

“We welcome the footballer to the AEL family and wish him every success in the blue and yellow jersey.”

AEL Limassol are currently seventh in the Cyprus Premier League standings with 27 points after 18 matches.

The club last won the Cypriot First Division title during the 2011/12 season.
