Tau Attracts Interest In North Africa After Qatar Exit

Bafana Bafana vice-captain Percy Tau is on the radar of a host of teams in North Africa as he is available on the market as a free agent after parting ways with Qatar Stars League outfit Qatar SC, just six months after joining the club.

The Witbank native left Egyptian giants Al Ahly for the Middle East outfit in the January transfer window, penning a short-term deal for six months, which included a clause that stipulated the club’s desire to extend his stay by a further two seasons should he impress.

However, things didn’t go according to plan, with the Doha-based side opting against offering the Mamelodi Sundowns academy graduate an extension on his contract as the hierarchy felt the player didn’t leave a lasting impression on the field.

During his stint in Qatar, Tau provided four assists in nine top-flight games. Furthermore, he helped the team to survive relegation, with two points above the drop zone after they registered a 10th-place finish in the 12-team championship.

Now, with Tau, who won a staggering 13 titles with Al Ahly, including two CAF Champions League trophies, available on a free transfer, clubs in the Botola Pro League and the Egyptian Premier League are circling for his signature ahead of the upcoming 2025/26 season.

Zamalek SC is believed to be open to acquiring the services of the Bafana international, more especially that he presents a perfect market opportunity, but with the approval of the new technical team, as the club is searching for a new coach after sacking Portuguese mentor Jose Peseiro.

In addition to the White Knights’ interest, three unnamed clubs from the Moroccan topflight are understood to be in negotiations to lure the 2022/23 CAF Inter-club player of the year. Tau was previously linked with Wydad Casablanca after Rulani Mokwena took over in July 2024.

Moreover, Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly monitoring the 31-year-old forward’s situation, with the club set to compete in the CAF Confederation Cup next season after clinching the Nedbank Cup title at the expense of fierce rivals Orlando Pirates last month.
