Tiwani Unsure About U/20 AFCON Participation

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Asekho Tiwani has stated that his participation in the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt is uncertain, emphasizing that the decision rests with his club.

Tiwani is among the 21 players selected by Amajita coach Raymond Mdaka for the tournament, with the squad scheduled to convene on Sunday.

However, Sportswire has learned that since the squad announcement last week, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has yet to receive confirmation from clubs regarding the release of these players.

This uncertainty stems from the season’s crucial final stages. Sundowns are currently in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League, hosting Al Ahly in the first leg at Loftus Stadium on Saturday at 15:00.

They are also strong contenders for the Betway Premiership title, leading the table with 58 points after 23 matches, a 12-point advantage over second-placed Orlando Pirates, who have three games in hand.

Tiwani, who joined Masandawana from Sekhukhune United at the beginning of the season, has quickly become a trusted young talent under coach Miguel Cardoso, seamlessly fitting into the left-back position. Furthermore, he has risen to captain the U-20 national team.

While the 19-year-old harbors aspirations of playing at AFCON, his club has not yet communicated their decision regarding his release for the competition.

“They have not said anything,” Tiwani revealed. “I think any young star would be happy to represent his country because it’s a big tournament. There, you’re not only representing yourself, but you can also gain a lot of opportunities. So, I’d be happy, but it’s not up to me; the club will decide.”

When pressed for his current understanding of his availability, Tiwani responded, “At this stage, I don’t know.”

The 21-player U-20 national team squad also includes Tiwani’s Sundowns teammate Kutlwano Letlhako, whose playing opportunities have been limited since Cardoso’s arrival.

The CAF Champions League final is scheduled to take place on 24 May, which is the first leg, and the second leg on 1 June, while the U-20 AFCON concludes on 18 May. Asked about his preference given this scheduling overlap, Tiwani replied with a smile, “Anywhere.”

Amajita are set to begin their Group B campaign against hosts Egypt on 27 April, followed by a match against Tanzania on 30 April. Their final group stage encounter will be against Sierra Leone on 6 May. The four semi-finalists at the 2025 U-20 AFCON will then represent the African continent at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile in September 2025.
