Vilakazi Training With SuperSport

Veteran attacker Sibusiso Vilakazi is hoping to revive his career by training with SuperSport United in the hopes of landing a contract.

Vilakazi is currently without a club after struggling for playing time under sacked coach Lehlohonolo Seema at Sekhukhune United last season.

He joined Sekhukhune in the January transfer window of the 2022/23 season and played a key role in their run to the Nedbank Cup final. However, they fell short, losing to Orlando Pirates at Loftus Stadium. Vilakazi even opened the scoring for Sekhukhune, but Pirates ultimately emerged victorious with two goals.

If Vilakazi secures a deal with SuperSport, it would see him reunite with a coach who enjoyed previous success against him. He previously worked under Gavin Hunt at Bidvest Wits, where he won the PSL Footballer of the Year award in the 2013/14 season. Interestingly, during that same season, Wits lost the Nedbank Cup final to Orlando Pirates in Durban.

Vilakazi then moved to Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2016/17 season and enjoyed a trophy-laden period. He won the league five times, the Nedbank Cup twice, the Carling Knockout trophy, and the MTN8.

He was part of the Sundowns squad that won the CAF Champions League in 2016, but unfortunately, CAF had already closed the registration window before his arrival, preventing him from participating in the competition. This was also the case for Thapelo Morena and Ricardo Nascimento, who joined Sundowns at the same time.

Despite missing out on the Champions League title, Vilakazi did contribute to Sundowns’ CAF Super Cup victory. He came on as a late substitute in the final against TP Mazembe from DR Congo.

Vilakazi left Sundowns to join TS Galaxy ahead of the 2022/23 season, but his time there was short-lived due to the high demands placed on him by coach Sead Ramovic.
